Therapy

Our team offers a range of online psychological therapies to meet you or your child’s needs. All of our therapists have a specialist interest in neurodivergence and have training and experience with ADHD, autism and tics. They can work with difficulties such as anxiety and depression, whilst adapting therapy to maximise effectiveness for autistic, ADHD and other neurodivergent individuals.

Depending on the age of the child it may be more suitable for the sessions to be with the parents rather than the child.  We tend to recommend online therapy sessions to children aged 10 and over, as often younger children benefit more from face to face sessions.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is a practical, solution-focussed type of talking therapy. It helps individuals manage their difficulties by aiming to change the way they think, behave and feel. It is based on the idea that our thoughts, feelings and behaviour are all connected. By changing one of these we can affect the others. CBT is effective for many mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is a structured approach that focusses on the present and involves homework tasks that clients complete between sessions. CBT can be adapted for neurodivergent clients.

ADHD coaching is a supportive, goal-oriented process designed to help individuals with ADHD manage their symptoms and improve their daily functioning. Rooted in principles like cognitive-behavioural strategies and psychoeducation, it focuses on areas such as time management, organisation, focus, and problem-solving. Coaches work collaboratively with clients to develop personalized strategies, build self-awareness, and create sustainable habits that empower them to navigate challenges and achieve their goals. This approach fosters confidence and independence, helping individuals take charge of their lives in a structured and positive way.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for ADHD is a structured, goal-oriented form of talk therapy that helps individuals manage challenges like inattention, impulsivity, and emotional regulation. It focuses on identifying and reframing negative thought patterns, improving time management, and developing practical strategies to reduce procrastination and distractions. CBT empowers individuals with ADHD to build healthier habits, boost self-esteem, and enhance their ability to stay organized and focused. While it doesn’t directly treat the neurological aspects of ADHD, it is highly effective in addressing the emotional and behavioural difficulties associated with the condition.

We offer a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for tics called Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tourette’s Syndrome (CBITS) or Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT). These are well-proven psychological therapies developed to manage tics.  The aim of therapy is to help you to feel more in control of your tics and less bothered by them. This is done through careful identification of your tics, tracking, monitoring and learning how to control them. Learning about your tics, what triggers them and how you feel before a tic happens (the premonitory urge) are all important steps in gaining control over your tics. You will then learn strategies to manage and minimise your tics. You will practice these strategies in session with your therapist and between sessions by yourself or with the support of family members.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), often known as part of the third wave of CBT. It aims to increase psychological flexibility, the ability to stay present and to choose behaviours in line with one’s values even in the face of difficult thoughts and feelings. ACT teaches skills to lessen the impact of unhelpful thoughts. The therapy focusses on six core processes: acceptance, cognitive diffusion. Being present, self as context, values, and committed action. ACT is effective for a range of difficulties including anxiety, depressions, OCD and chronic pain.
Compassion-Focussed Therapy (CFT) is an approach that is designed to help individuals who struggle with shame and self-criticism. It aims to help individuals to become more self-compassionate, to learn emotional regulation skills and improve their wellbeing. It integrates techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy with concepts from other fields such as evolutionary and Buddhist psychology. It can be particularly beneficial for those who have experienced childhood trauma.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidenced based therapy designed to help people to manage intense emotions, to build healthier relationships and respond to distress with greater stability. It was initially designed to help people with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), but it is now widely used for difficulties with emotional regulation such as those seen in ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, eating disorders and for people who have experienced childhood trauma. DBT blends techniques from CBT and mindfulness, helping people to uncover negative patterns of thoughts and behaviour and to build more effective coping strategies. It teaches practical tools for everyday life, with an emphasis on skill-building and lasting change.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is designed to help people to process and recover from traumatic experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping or auditory tones) to process traumatic memories. EMDR has been found to be effective in a relatively short amount of time, and fewer sessions are often needed than with other trauma-specific therapies.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) integrates mindfulness practices with cognitive behavioural strategies. The therapy helps individual to become more aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviour in the present moment, to cultivate mindfulness, and to apply cognitive strategies to disrupt negative thinking. The client learns to take a non-judgemental approach to their thoughts and experiences, enhancing emotional resilience and wellbeing. It is part of the third wave of CBT therapies that have been developed and researched in recent years. It can be particularly effective for depression and chronic pain, and can be used for a range of difficulties.
Trauma-focussed CBT (TF-CBT) is a specialised form of cognitive behavioural therapy designed for people who have experienced significant trauma and may be experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Traumatic events might range from discrete single events such as a car accident to multiple events such as a history of childhood abuse. TF-CBT aims to help clients to manage their symptoms, improve emotional regulation, and develop positive coping strategies.
Narrative therapy is an approach that aims to empower clients to reshape their life stories in conversation with their therapist. It is often used in a creative and light-hearted way with children and families. By separating people from their problems narrative therapy emphasises an individual’s strengths. Through a collaborative, storytelling approach clients gain a deeper understanding of their skills and values, enabling them to work with current difficulties, celebrating successes and paving the way for change.
Schema therapy focusses on early maladaptive schema (or ways of thinking) that develop in childhood and are thought to underlie long-term psychological difficulties (such as chronic depression, chronic anxiety or relationship difficulties). The therapy aims to help clients to develop new and healthier ways of thinking and coping strategies, to improve their mood, wellbeing and relationships. It is a longer-term therapy than CBT and is often tried when CBT has not been found to be fully effective.
