Post-diagnostic support

At NeuroDiverse Online, we are able to offer post-diagnostic support. This can be offered to the client themselves, or their parents if they are a child/young person.

Understanding your diagnosis

A big part of post‑diagnostic support is psychoeducation. This means taking time with a clinician or support professional to explore what the diagnosis actually means in everyday life. You might look at the diagnostic criteria together, discuss how they apply to your experiences, and unpack how traits have shaped your strengths, challenges, and coping strategies over time. This process can be surprisingly empowering – it helps many people make sense of patterns they’ve lived with for years and gives language to things that previously felt confusing or isolating.

Therapeutic approaches and personal preferences

Post‑diagnostic support is highly personalised. Some people prefer a structured, cognitive‑behavioural approach, where you explore the links between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and experiment with new strategies. For ADHD, this might include CBT for ADHD or ADHD coaching, which focuses on practical skills such as planning, organisation, emotional regulation, and managing attention. Others prefer non‑CBT approaches – something more reflective, relational, or creative.

For Tourette’s or tic disorders, behavioural therapies like Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBiT), Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) or Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) may be offered. These approaches help you understand the patterns around tics and develop tools to reduce their impact.

Support for parents and families

When a child or young person receives a diagnosis, parents often benefit from support. This might involve learning about the condition, understanding how to support emotional regulation, navigating school systems, or adjusting expectations at home. Parent‑focused sessions can also offer space to process feelings, ask questions, and build confidence in advocating for your child.

Navigating school and education

Post‑diagnostic support often includes help with understanding what accommodations or adjustments might be available in school, college, or university. This could involve discussing Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), exam arrangements, assistive technology, or strategies for communicating with teachers. The goal is to make the learning environment more accessible and reduce barriers that might otherwise get in the way of progress.

Support in the workplace

For adults, post-diagnostic support may include exploring reasonable adjustments at work – things like flexible hours, written instructions, quiet spaces, assistive software, or changes to workload structure. Some people also benefit from workplace coaching, which focuses on building practical systems that align with their strengths. Understanding your rights and how to communicate your needs can make a huge difference to confidence and wellbeing at work.

A personalised journey

Ultimately, post‑diagnostic support is not a one‑size‑fits‑all package. It’s shaped around the specific difficulties you want to focus on, the goals you have, and the therapeutic style that feels right for you.
