Initial consultation

The initial consultation lasts 60 minutes and explores current concerns, including any mental health difficulties. The initial consultation is conducted mostly with the parents, with the child attending briefly. We will then make a recommendation regarding the next steps.

Pre-assessment

Neurodevelopmental questionnaires are sent out to parents and returned to us prior to your next appointment.

Diagnostic Assessment

The structured diagnostic interview lasts approximately 1-2 hours. This includes the child and their parents. The interview involves questions about the child’s historical and current tics, their frequency, and their severity. This is typically conducted online.

A video of the child is collected by a parent or other informant lasting 5 to 15 minutes. This should include the full range of the child’s tics.

We also collect additional information from the child’s class teacher or SENCO.

Next steps

We schedule a feedback meeting with the parents to explain our diagnostic decision and provide them with a detailed diagnostic report with personalised recommendations.

FAQs

Will the assessment be recognised by schools and the NHS?

Our assessment and diagnosis process follows best practice guidelines of the European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome (ESSTS). Most Tourette Syndrome (TS) specialists in the UK follow the European guidelines as the UK National Institute of Clinical Excellence has not yet developed guidance on TS.

Will the report be shared with the NHS?

The family can choose to share the assessment outcome and report with their NHS GP.

Where are in-person appointments held?

The psychological assessment process usually takes place online. If required, in-person meetings may take place in West Sussex, Surrey or Kent.

How long does the assessment take and how much does it cost?

The assessment process usually takes place over the course of a few weeks. Prices for assessments and therapy vary from patient to patient depending on their assessment and diagnosis needs. Prices start at £360 for an initial consultation. For a full diagnostic assessment, prices start at £1,800 for a child, and £1,565 for an adult. What will the diagnostic report include?

The report includes detailed information about the assessment and diagnostic decision, as well as personalised recommendations for the child, family, and school.
