Dr Mags Patterson

Therapy Team

Hi, I’m Mags a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of experience working both within the NHS and the private sectors. I have a passion for and specialism in working with children, young people, families/carers and adults who consider themselves as neurodivergent. I have experience of working with Autism, ADHD, and Tics/Tourette’s Syndrome. It can be difficult to seek support and work out who is the right therapist for you to share your personal experiences with or what support is right for you. I share some of my experience and skills to hopefully support you in deciding whether I might be the right person with the right skills to support you. I offer personalised assessment and therapy for neurodivergent children, adults, and families. We work collaboratively to develop an understanding of the current difficulties you are experiencing and develop a suitable therapeutic package to support positive change in your psychological wellbeing, based on your goals. We will also work together to learn how to manage and live with neurodivergence in a neurotypical world. Neurodiversity is not what needs to be fixed or mended. Rather our work together will focus on goals developed by yourself to support positive change in your psychological wellbeing. We will utilise your abilities, strengths, special interests and unique thinking styles alongside my therapeutic knowledge and skills to bring positive understanding and/or change to your life. I bring specialist experience in working with neurodivergence, trauma, OCD, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, psychosis, emotional dysregulation, sleep difficulties, low self-esteem and identity issues.

I draw on a range of therapeutic modalities including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), parenting and systemic work to tailor and inform my practice to ensure that any therapeutic support is tailored to your needs and goals, using a therapeutic approach which best suits you. I have skills and experience in adapting therapeutic models to meet the individual needs of neurodiverse people.

I have personal experience of living with and supporting a neurodiverse child, who is now a young adult finding his way in the world.
